Atique Ahmed or Ateeq Ahmed (born 10 August 1962) is an Indian criminal-politician belonging to the Samajwadi Party. In 2004-2009, he was a member of the 14th Lok Sabha from the Phulpur (Lok Sabha Constituency) in Uttar Pradesh.[1] He is currently in prison facing trial in 35 criminal cases including several cases of murder[2] and is viewed as one of the most powerful ganglords in the Allahabad region. As of February 2008, his gang is said to be 134 strong.[3]

Criminal charges

Atique Ahmad has been named in the murder of Raju Pal, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP)legislator who had won from Allahabad (West) constituency, defeating Atique's brother Khalid Azeem 'Ashraf'. After his killing, Ashraf again re-gained the legislative seat. Investigators have pointed to Mohammad Ashraf as the main accused in the murder of Raju Pal, with assistance from his elder brother and Mafia don Atiq Ahmed.[4]

In the U.P. Assembly elections, 2007, Raju Pal's widow Pooja Pal won from the Allahabad (West) seat.

According to his nomination papers for the 2004 election,[5] criminal cases pending against Atique Ahmed include the murder of an undertrial named Akhtar in the Allahabad High Court premises in 1995, and conspiracy to murder Javed Iqbal alias Pappoo in Allahabad in 2001, in which one of Javed's bodyguards were killed.

2009 General Elections

In the 2009 General Elections, Atiq Ahmad was allowed to run for election (since he is yet to be convicted in any case).[6] However, the Samajwadi Party had expelled him in 2008, and Mayawati refused him a ticket under BSP,[7] so he stood from the Apna Dal party from Pratapgarh, but he lost (ranked fourth).[8]

Meanwhile the Phulpur seat went to another mafia don Kapil Muni Karwariya of the BSP, who has 10 criminal charges[6] and is among the top 10 criminal MPs in the 15th Lok Sabha.
